the sheep are munchin’,  the grain sheds are emptyin’, birds are being fed and farmers are catching up on office work.
The sheep are doing a great job of eating their way through the massive field of cover crops between foxton and Fowlmere. They’re all in lamb, due to in March so watch this space for exciting updates on this! After the sheep are finished, that field will be ploughed and planted with sugarbeet.
The grain from 2025 harvest is being sold. The prices are very low for multiple and complex reasons I don’t really understand other than that people aren’t drinking enough beer! Prices for malting barley are very low so do a farmer a favour and drink up to help out.
we feed the birds over the winter as there is less natural foodstuffs available for them at this time of year. Next month is the ‘big farmland bird count’ where farmers across the country count birds on their farm and submit results to the game and wildlife conservation trust.
In January, farmers can also be found outside their natural habitat and in the office instead. This month Tom has mapped out where all his environmental areas will be going for the next year and declared this to the government scheme along with lots of other stuff bein’ sorted.
Weather wise: “Enjoying the dry weather…..until we need some rain….which will be soon”
Thats all clear then.
